• Marketing Tool of the Week: Color Palettes with Abobe Kuler

There is no shortage of companies asking small businesses to shell out hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to promote themselves. But if you’re like most small business owners, you could really use some free tools to jumpstart your marketing. That’s why we’ve begun a weekly blog series featuring free tools for SMB owners to help you with your various marketing needs.

You know that graphics and visual content is important for marketing your small business. Colors evoke emotions and feelings in a customer and is used to convey the look and feel of your brand. But you’re not a designer.

How do you get started with colors? With so many choices, it’s easy to feel lost. You’re not alone! Coming up with color palettes and themes is difficult to decide on, even for artistic people.

That’s why there’s Adobe Kuler! Kuler is a free website that creates color palettes for you to make choosing colors easy!

How Does Kuler Work?

Adobe Kuler is simple to use. You can search for premade palettes to use and share or you can customize your own. Kuler offers palettes based on keywords or HEX codes. You can share, save, favorite, edit, and download the palettes for you or a designer to use.

Getting Started with Kuler

Premade Palettes

To get started with premade palettes all you need to do is click on Explore. There you will find all of the saved palettes. You can sort by popularity, most used, or a random assortment.

You can also search by keyword. The palettes below were generated by a search for “orange and red” and would be good to use for a Fall or Thanksgiving color theme.

Custom Palettes

If you already have a color that you want to use, or just want to make your own palette, you can create custom palettes by clicking on Create. From there you can either choose a color on the wheel or enter a HEX code.

In the Create tab there are options for the palettes. You can view and save palettes that are analogous, monotone, complementary, triad, compound, or shades of the main color you chose.

Color palettes on Kuler can be used many ways. You can share, pin, or download the palette to use on your own. You can also retrieve the HEX colors to use for graphics. For example, if you’re using our Marketing Tool Canva, just type (or copy and paste) the HEX code from Kuler into the color wheel. This will change the color of your design or font to match the color palette on Kuler!

You can also use the palettes for giving a designer ideas for inspiration. At ThriveHive, our website clients often share color palettes with us for inspiration during the build. If there is no palette provided, our designers often build custom Kuler palettes as a guide during the website design process. For example, we would use a bright palette of red, blue, and yellow for a daycare center and a calming palette of purple, green, and grey for a spa. Check out our Pinterest board of palettes.
