Snapchat. It’s the popular app that’s meant for sharing pictures and messages you may not want sticking around forever. But did you know it can also be an important tool when it comes to digital marketing?
There are already more than 25 million Snapchat users in the US, and that number is growing daily. Those users share more than 400 million “snaps” every single day. TechCrunch also recently recognized Snapchat as the Best Mobile App of 2013.
It’s clear that Snapchat represents a powerful audience, but can it be leveraged for business?
Don’t think of Snapchat as just a tool for high schoolers sending pictures back and forth. Businesses are now hitching a ride on the app’s bandwagon, too!
Unlike the original ephemeral messages, the app’s “Stories” feature allows a user’s pictures to remain up for longer than just a few seconds, sometimes as long as a day. It also allows that snap to reach all of your followers instead of a select few. By using this feature, brands are coming up with creative ways to advertise their products and events, especially if they are going after a younger demographic.
Don’t believe that big business is using flashy Snapchat? Some of these companies include Taco Bell, HBO, and even NPR. Starting last fall, NPR began using Snapchat to share quick facts from their newsroom with users, as well as quick, 10-second book and movie reviews. The goal? To pique users’ interests and have them head over to their mobile site.
More than 20 percent of Snapchat users are also iPhone users, and mobile web browsing is expected to surpass desktop usage by next year. If you hook a potential customer by creating a clever snap, chances are they will head to your mobile site to get more information. But is your site mobile-compatible?
The last thing you want is a customer getting frustrated when checking you out on a smartphone, only to have to pinch-and-zoom just to read the information on your site or find a phone number. Chances are if they leave the site because of that, they won’t be coming back.
So why not kill two birds with one stone? Make sure your company’s website is responsive, and get Snapping!
