• Even More Great Tools for Marketers (and you!)

In developing and implementing strategy, marketers understand that any improvement to the process can have a huge impact on the success of a campaign. Even the smallest change to how you search or edit or implement something can positively affect your results.

From stats and analytics to content creation and graphic design, these tools can enable you to take your process to the next level.

1. Google’s Reverse Image Search

Google’s reverse image search has become more and more popular in recent years. This search functionality allows you to more easily search for an exact image online.

Google’s reverse image search works easily in three ways:

  1. Drag and drop an image from your computer or a website into the search box
  2. Upload an image directly from your computer
  3. Copy and paste the URL of an image that appears online

Once you provide an image, Google then searches for sites where the image appears online.

When would you need this search functionality? It’s the perfect tool to use if you forget where you found an image and you want to cite ownership. It’s also useful for finding a higher resolution version of an image when you need a better quality. Interestingly, it’s also useful for identifying pictures of famous artwork, buildings or locations, and even people.

Frequently use Google’s Reverse Image Search? Search by Image (by Google) is a great Chrome extension that allows you to easily search by image.

PRO-TIP: Have you ever picked out the perfect stock photo, go to download it, and then realize you can’t find the original download URL? In this case, TinEye is the best reverse image search engine to use. In many cases, Google’s reverse image search will find you examples of stock image on other people’s websites, not the original stock photo download link. TinEye usually points you in the right direction.

2. Topsy

Looking to write a blog post or an article, and need to check out a Twitter trend from a few years ago? This site enables you to search all tweets since 2006, which is a much easier way to do research than relying on Twitter searches alone.

Topsy is also a good way to evaluate your own business on Twitter. Try it out by searching your business name and check out the prevalence of posts over time. What type of content is getting the most coverage? What links were most popular? By taking a look beyond retweets and favorite alerts, you can get a better idea of what is working and what is not, and adapt your strategy accordingly.

3. MeasureIt!

This tool is perfect for the budding graphic designer. Looking to find the pixel width and height of any element on a webpage? Download this Chrome extension for an easy-to-use app that functions right in your browser. Never guess on sizes again!

4. Awesome Screenshot: Capture & Annotate

In our last installment of Great Tools for Marketers, we included Snipping Tool, a program that allows you to easily take screen captures, and comes pre-installed on Windows. While Snipping Tool works great for simple screencaptures, we recommend Awesome Screenshot for more complex screencaps.

With Awesome Screenshot, you can capture any section of the screen and then edit the screenshot within the program. The Chrome extension allows you to add boxes or arrows, blur sensitive info, add text, and more. Even better, the extension allows you to save the screenshot to your computer, copy it to use in a new program, or upload it to their website and receive a shareable link.

5. Yet Another Lorem Ipsum Generator

Have you ever wanted to get started on designing a website or newsletter, but you’re still working on the copywriting? Lorem Ipsum is dummy text used in place of copywriting, to be added later.

In many cases, you can use Lorem Ipsum text to literally fill in the holes. You can fill out sidebars or headers with Lorem Ipsum to get a sense of how the final product will look, avoiding a costly delay in the design process. Just remember to go back and replace the Lorem Ipsum text with your real copy at the end of the design process!

Yet Another Lorem Ipsum Generator is a fun and quick Chrome extension that can help designers easily pull small or large sections of Lorem Ipsum text for use in web design. After you download the extension to your browser, just click the “Y” button, and then select the number of squares of Lorem Ipsum text you need. The extension also features dummy text for dates, email addresses, and domains.

PRO-TIP: When you’re designing a website, newsletter, pamphlet or any medium that involves copywriting, it can be challenging to know how much content you need. By beginning the design process with Lorem Ipsum text, you can find out exactly how much content you really need. Just insert the Lorem Ipsum text, decide what amount of content looks “right”, and then use a word count to see how much you actually need to write. Then, write your content accordingly!

With a few basic tools, you can save time and effort, and easily take your marketing to the next level.
